The United States is celebrating the 250th anniversary of its independence on Saturday with parades, concerts and fireworks across.
The country, even as millions grapple with an intense heatwave, wildfire concerns and a politically charged atmosphere.
The landmark occasion commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, with events planned nationwide. President Donald Trump is set to headline the celebrations in Washington, DC, where he will address the nation from the National Mall before a major fireworks display, according to the Associated Press.
US Marks 250 Years Of Independence
Festivities are taking place in cities across the country. New York and Chicago will host their signature fireworks displays, while Los Angeles has lined up a star-studded concert featuring Queen Latifah, The Smashing Pumpkins, Chris Stapleton and special guest Chaka Khan. In Bristol, Rhode Island, America’s oldest continuous Independence Day celebration, dating back to 1785, is once again drawing large crowds.
A day earlier, Trump visited Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, using the occasion to deliver a speech in which he warned that communism remains a major threat to the United States.
Heatwave, Fire Risks Affect Celebrations
Extreme weather has disrupted festivities in several parts of the country. In Washington, sections of the Great American State Fair were temporarily closed because of soaring temperatures, while the city’s Independence Day parade was cancelled. In contrast, the Pacific Northwest has experienced cooler conditions.
The combination of scorching heat and dry weather has also heightened wildfire risks. Several states have imposed burn bans amid drought conditions, prompting authorities to urge caution as millions prepare to celebrate with fireworks. Industry groups expect a surge in backyard fireworks displays despite the restrictions.
In Issaquah, a suburb of Seattle, resident Megan Kurowski said she was excited to mark the nation’s 250th birthday and was considering watching the fireworks from a paddleboard.
“Everyone’s just, from what it seems, been pretty excited about celebrating 250 years,” she said.
The holiday weekend also coincides with a packed calendar of sporting and entertainment events, including Major League Baseball games, FIFA World Cup fixtures and major music releases.
Trump Highlights Political Divisions
The semiquincentennial comes against the backdrop of deep political and social divisions in the United States. During his Mount Rushmore speech, Trump described communism as a “mortal threat to American liberty,” framing it as one of the country’s greatest challenges.
“It is the greatest threat to our country, including World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor or even 9/11,” the president said.
Despite the extreme weather and ongoing political tensions, communities across the United States are pressing ahead with celebrations to mark one of the most significant milestones in the nation’s history.
