MAGA Supporters Target H-1B Visas After US Senator Calls for ‘Pause’
A political storm has erupted in the US after Utah Republican Senator Mike Lee questioned whether it was time to pause the H-1B visa program. The senator posted on X: “Is it time to pause H1B visas?”
The H-1B visa is a crucial pathway for Indian professionals and students aspiring to work or study in the US. Lee’s remarks sparked an intense debate online, particularly among MAGA supporters, many of whom called the program a “scam” and demanded its termination.
Some users resorted to racist attacks against Indians, with derogatory slurs trending on X. Several posts claimed that young white Americans were being denied tech jobs due to foreign workers.
Walmart Rumours Add Fuel to Fire
The controversy escalated further after unverified claims circulated on the workplace app Blind and X, alleging a fraud scandal linked to Walmart’s Global Tech division. The rumours suggested kickbacks in contract hiring and hinted at H-1B misuse.
However, Walmart issued a statement dismissing the speculation, clarifying that its recent internal probe was unrelated to visas or Indian workers.
Wider Concerns Over Racism
The online outrage comes amid a series of racist incidents targeting Indians in both the US and Europe. Leaders, including the President of Ireland, have warned that such online hate speech is increasingly spilling over into real-world violence.
Meanwhile, the H-1B debate is expected to intensify as the US heads deeper into election season, with immigration once again emerging as a polarising campaign issue.
