Virat Kohli mourns death of former U-19 teammate Amanpreet Singh Gill at 36

Virat Kohli paid an emotional tribute to his former Under-19 teammate and ex-Punjab cricket team pacer Amanpreet Singh Gill.

Who passed away at the age of 36 on Wednesday, May 6. His sudden demise has left the Indian cricket fraternity grieving.

Gill represented Punjab in six first-class matches and picked up 11 wickets during his domestic career. He was also part of the Punjab Kings squad in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League and later served on Punjab’s senior selection panel. The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed.

Reacting to the news, Kohli expressed shock and sorrow in a post on X, offering condolences to Gill’s family and loved ones.

“Shocked and saddened to hear about Amanpreet Gill’s passing. Sending prayers and strength to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace. Om Shanti,” Kohli wrote.

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also mourned Gill’s passing, remembering him as a humble and hardworking cricketer.

“Deeply saddened to hear about Amanpreet Singh Gill’s passing. Shared the dressing room in our early days, he was a quiet, hardworking cricketer who loved the game. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace Om Shanti,” Yuvraj posted on X.

Punjab Kings paid tribute to their former player through a heartfelt message on social media.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of Amanpreet Singh Shergill, who proudly represented Punjab and was a part of the Punjab Kings family. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire cricketing fraternity,” the franchise posted.

Gill also represented India at the youth level, featuring in five Youth ODIs and one Youth Test in 2007. In that match, he dismissed former Thisara Perera all-rounder Thisara Perera. However, he narrowly missed selection for the India Under-19 squad captained by Kohli that went on to win the 2008 U-19 World Cup.
