US Imposes Additional 25% Tariffs on Indian Imports from August 27

The United States has officially announced an additional 25 per cent tariff on imports from India, effective 12:01 am (EST) on August 27. The notice, issued by the Department of Homeland Security through US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), implements President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 14329, signed on August 6.

The executive order directs US agencies to counter “threats to the United States by the Government of the Russian Federation,” targeting India for new duties as part of that policy. The tariffs will apply to a wide range of Indian goods listed in the annex to the notice, affecting all shipments arriving for use or removed from warehouses after the deadline.

Trump Targets Russia’s Trading Partners

President Trump also indicated the possibility of additional tariffs on countries trading with Russia or further sanctions on Moscow if a diplomatic deal fails to materialize. He warned of “very big consequences” in the coming weeks if no progress is made. Notably, similar measures have not been applied to other major Russian oil buyers, including China.

India’s Response

Earlier in August, the US had imposed a 25 per cent tariff, bringing the total levy on Indian goods to 50 per cent as a penalty for India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. Indian officials have condemned the secondary tariffs as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,” while expressing hope that ongoing peace talks could prevent further escalation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi affirmed that India will protect its national interests and withstand economic pressures. Speaking in Ahmedabad, he said:

“No matter how much pressure comes, we will keep increasing our strength to withstand it. Today, the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan is gaining momentum, powered by decades of hard work and progress from states like Gujarat.”

India continues to seek a balanced approach amid mounting trade tensions with the US, emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding national interests while pursuing international trade partnerships.
