The White House press briefing on Tuesday saw Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defending President Donald Trump’s role in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations.
She highlighted Trump’s recent diplomatic initiatives and criticised what she called “misleading and negative media coverage” of his foreign policy efforts.
Leavitt specifically accused several left-leaning outlets of downplaying or misrepresenting the administration’s outreach to Russian President Vladimir Putin. She defended Trump’s decision to formally welcome Putin during a diplomatic engagement, stating it followed standard protocol applicable to any world leader.
Addressing reports that the Alaska meeting between Trump and Putin yielded no results, Leavitt said the session was intended as a “listening exercise” with no immediate agreements expected. She also reiterated the administration’s stance on Ukraine, confirming, “The President has definitively stated US boots will NOT be on the ground in Ukraine, but we can certainly help coordinate and provide other security guarantees to European allies.”
Vice President JD Vance echoed support for Leavitt on social media, praising her for calling out what he termed media falsehoods regarding the negotiations.
Meanwhile, President Trump confirmed preparations are ongoing for a potential trilateral summit with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as the administration continues efforts to facilitate direct talks aimed at ending the conflict.
