WI vs SA: India Monitor as South Africa, West Indies Chase Semis

2

South Africa and the West Indies face off in a high-stakes Super 8 clash on Thursday, February 26, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The winner will move a big step closer to the T20 World Cup 2026 semi-finals, while India and Zimbabwe watch nervously from the sidelines.

India’s net run rate of -3.800 took a hit after their heavy defeat to South Africa, a figure that could prove decisive if three teams finish on six points. A strong net run rate may well be the difference between progressing and going home, as India painfully experienced in the 2012 Super 8.

South Africa remain unbeaten, boasting a +3.800 net run rate, and have looked clinical throughout the tournament. The West Indies are also undefeated, coming off a thumping win over Zimbabwe and carrying the confidence of a team firing on all cylinders.

Ahmedabad Advantage?

The Proteas have played four of their five tournament games at the Narendra Modi Stadium. But left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj says familiarity isn’t enough:

“Every game has been on a slightly different pitch. The key is adapting quickly and executing your plans on the day,” he said.

West Indies in Form

The West Indies have been relentless, unbeaten in five matches. Since their T20 World Cup triumph in India in 2016, they’ve struggled in subsequent editions, but this squad has looked fearless. Batting coach Floyd Reifer said:

“We have nothing to prove. We plan every game to win and are playing with freedom.”

Their 254-run hammering of Zimbabwe on Monday—the second-highest T20 World Cup total ever—was a statement, but South Africa will be a far tougher test.

WI vs SA: Head-to-Head

The two teams are evenly matched in T20Is overall, with the West Indies holding a slight edge, but South Africa historically dominate in T20 World Cups.

Overall: 29 matches – SA 14, WI 15

T20 World Cups: 5 matches – SA 4, WI 1

Pitch and Conditions

Ahmedabad’s pitch has favoured teams batting first, with an average score of 191, compared to 169 for chasers. But South Africa have shown chasing is possible, having knocked down 176 in just 17.1 overs. Weather is expected to be bright and sunny, with temperatures around 34°C.
