Winter escape beckons as Caribbean nation reopens to tourists

If winter’s gloom and chill aren’t your idea of comfort, a sun-soaked escape may be just the reset you need — and Jamaica has reopened its doors to travellers at just the right time.

The Caribbean nation, celebrated for its rich culture, music, landscapes and cuisine, has long been a favourite among global tourists. Tourism, however, was temporarily halted after Hurricane Melissa struck in October, forcing the island to focus on recovery and rebuilding. By December, Jamaica was ready to welcome visitors again, this time with a renewed emphasis on sustainability and resilience.

“Rebuilding efforts have been undertaken with a strong focus on environmental responsibility and long-term resilience,” said Simeron Ghei of the Jamaica Tourism Board. According to the board, restoration work prioritised tourism infrastructure while safeguarding natural ecosystems, promoting sustainable practices among tourism partners, and working closely with local communities.

For visitors, the reopening offers a chance to experience Jamaica more thoughtfully while still embracing the energy and warmth the island is known for.

Hospitality properties across the country have used the pause to upgrade facilities and refine guest experiences. Experiential resorts such as Sandals are among those leading the reopening, offering activities ranging from scuba diving, snorkelling and kayaking to waterskiing, alongside Caribbean-inspired spa treatments, private cabanas and tranquil poolside retreats.

As winter settles in across much of the world, Jamaica presents a compelling alternative — an escape where grey skies give way to turquoise waters. Beyond the refreshed resorts, the island’s natural beauty remains a major draw, from the mist-covered Blue Mountains to the beaches of Negril and Montego Bay.

Travellers can also explore bustling local markets, sample regional flavours, or stumble upon spontaneous reggae performances in neighbourhood squares. Together, these experiences offer more than just a holiday — they reflect Jamaica’s enduring spirit, creativity and resilience in the wake of adversity.
