Faridabad Woman Found Dead in Pit Outside Home Two Months After Being Reported Missing; In-Laws Under Arrest.

The decomposed body of a 24-year-old woman, missing for nearly two months, was recovered from a 10-foot-deep pit in Faridabad’s Roshan Nagar on Friday, sparking shock and outrage. The woman, identified as Tanu Rajput, was buried under a freshly cemented lane adjacent to her marital home.

Police say Tanu, a native of Khera village in Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, had been married for under two years to Arun Singh, a resident of Palla’s Roshan Nagar. She was reported missing by her husband on April 25, who told police she was intellectually challenged and had eloped — a claim now revealed to be a cover-up.

Crime Unearthed
Tanu’s remains were exhumed using an excavator after police interrogated her father-in-law Bhoop Singh, 50, who eventually confessed to the murder during sustained questioning. He allegedly admitted to burying her body in a soak-pit at night to avoid detection. The pit had been quickly covered with concrete, under the pretense of drain work.

A post-mortem was conducted at Badshah Khan Civil Hospital, and the autopsy report is expected next week. Family members identified the body based on clothing recovered from the site.

Harassment Allegations and Motive
Tanu’s sister, Preeti Rajput, alleged that her sister had suffered mental and physical abuse since her marriage in 2023. “They began demanding jewellery and cash soon after the wedding. Tanu returned to our home for over a year due to the abuse,” she said. “When she went back, they resumed the harassment and even restricted her communication with us.”

Preeti said the family grew suspicious when Tanu’s in-laws informed them on April 23 that she had run away. The claim was inconsistent, and the family alleged foul play.

Inspector Satya Parkash, SHO at Palla police station, confirmed that the initial missing person complaint has now been upgraded to a murder case, and relevant sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita have been invoked, including Section 103(1) (murder), Section 3(5) (dowry death), and Section 61 (common intention).

Police are investigating dowry harassment and a possible extramarital affair as the suspected motives. Multiple members of the in-laws’ family are in custody, while others, including Tanu’s husband Arun, are currently absconding.

Community Reaction
Neighbours told police they had noticed excavation work near the lane two months ago, allegedly to fix drainage issues. They also noted how the area was swiftly sealed with cement.

Bhoop Singh, the accused father-in-law, ran a tailoring shop from the ground floor of the residence.
