Pat Cummins Backs Omitted Teen Star Sam Konstas, Says “His Time Will Come”
Australia captain Pat Cummins has thrown his weight behind rising star Sam Konstas, who was left out of the playing XI for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against South Africa at Lord’s. The 19-year-old, who impressed during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year, has been replaced by Marnus Labuschagne as a makeshift opener for the summit clash.
Speaking ahead of the final, Cummins assured that Konstas’ exclusion was not a reflection of his ability but rather a tactical decision prioritizing experience.
“He’s really young and has a long career ahead of him,” Cummins said. “Even if he’s not playing, just being in the squad is a valuable learning opportunity. At the same time, you’ve got guys like Bo Webster and Josh Inglis also on the fringe—it’s a good position to be in.”
Cummins emphasized the strength of Australia’s depth, highlighting that players like Cameron Green and Travis Head have also been competing for key spots, making selection more competitive than ever.
A Fearless Arrival
Konstas made an unforgettable debut in the BGT series, scoring a composed 60 in Melbourne followed by fighting knocks in Sydney. His combative on-field attitude—particularly his face-offs with Jasprit Bumrah and a physical exchange with Virat Kohli—quickly earned him a reputation as a gutsy customer.
However, the teenager’s red-ball opportunities have since been limited. He was omitted from the Sri Lanka tour in favor of experience, and now again for the WTC Final.
Eyes on the Future
Though missing the Lord’s final might sting, selectors see a long runway for Konstas, with the upcoming Ashes series and home summer presenting ideal chances for a comeback.
For now, Australia will count on Labuschagne and Head to take charge against a fierce South African pace battery.
