Saba Karim Backs KL Rahul to Replace Virat Kohli at No. 4 in England Test Series.
Former India chief selector Saba Karim has backed KL Rahul to take over the pivotal No. 4 spot in India’s Test lineup following Virat Kohli’s sudden retirement ahead of the upcoming series against England. Kohli’s exit has created a significant void in the middle order, prompting speculation about who will fill the crucial position.
While many believe skipper Shubman Gill could be promoted to No. 4, Karim believes KL Rahul is the ideal replacement. Emphasizing Rahul’s experience and adaptability, the former India wicketkeeper said the Karnataka batter can play a dual role — steadying the innings if early wickets fall and accelerating when needed.
“In Kohli’s absence, Rahul’s role becomes monumental. He’s someone who can bat at number four. Many have floated different names and batting positions, but I see KL as the best fit to take over Kohli’s role,” Karim said. “He can handle early setbacks and then build the innings. He has the technique, the temperament, and he’s done well in England.”
Karim further highlighted Rahul’s recent development as a batter, calling him more mature and reliable than ever before.
“Over the past one-and-a-half seasons, Rahul has grown in maturity. That kind of mental strength will be crucial in challenging English conditions,” he added.
Interestingly, Rahul has batted at No. 4 only twice in his Test career — both times against England — scoring 108 runs at an average of 54. However, he recently cemented his place as an opener alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25. With Rohit Sharma’s retirement also forcing a top-order reshuffle, moving Rahul to No. 4 would be a bold call for the Indian team management.
