Nitish Kumar Hikes Social Security Pension to ₹1,100 Ahead of Bihar Polls.

In a key pre-election move, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced an increase in the state’s social security pension, raising it from ₹1,000 to ₹1,100 per month. The decision comes months ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections and is expected to benefit millions of elderly, widowed, and disabled citizens under various pension schemes.

The announcement was made during a public function where the Chief Minister emphasized his government’s continued commitment to social welfare. He noted that this increase is aimed at helping the vulnerable cope with rising living costs.

Who Will Benefit

  • The hike applies to beneficiaries under schemes such as:
  • Mukhyamantri Vridhjan Pension Yojana (for senior citizens),
  • Widow pension schemes, and
  • Disability pension schemes.

The revised pension amount will come into effect from July 2025, according to government officials.

Political Significance
This pension hike is being widely viewed as a politically strategic move by Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) government, which is preparing for a tough electoral contest later this year. With inflation and rural distress among key voter concerns, the increased pension is expected to play well with economically vulnerable sections of society.

The Chief Minister also reiterated his government’s focus on expanding welfare coverage, improving rural infrastructure, and ensuring timely pension disbursements.
