As India celebrates the auspicious Rath Yatra festival on Friday, June 27, many are wondering whether banks will remain open. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar, banking services will be affected in select regions only.

Where Are Banks Closed?
Banks will remain closed in Bhubaneswar (Odisha) and Imphal (Manipur) today due to Rath Yatra and the Kang festival, respectively. These are region-specific holidays observed under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

Residents in these cities should also note a three-day bank closure:

June 27 (Friday): Rath Yatra / Kang festival

June 28 (Saturday): Fourth Saturday (banks closed)

June 29 (Sunday): Regular weekly holiday

Banks in all other parts of India will remain open and operate as usual.

What Is Rath Yatra?
Rath Yatra, or the Chariot Festival, is one of the most significant Hindu festivals, held annually in Puri, Odisha. It marks the symbolic journey of Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra, from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple. The deities are carried in giant wooden chariots pulled by thousands of devotees over a 3-km stretch. The festival is rooted in centuries-old tradition and includes elaborate rituals and vibrant processions.

What Is the Kang Festival?
Celebrated in Manipur, the Kang festival is the regional equivalent of Rath Yatra, observed by the Meitei Vaishnavite community. It involves a ceremonial chariot procession of Lord Jagannath and his siblings through the streets, drawing deep cultural and spiritual significance.

Upcoming Bank Holiday
According to the RBI’s official holiday list, the next scheduled bank closure will be on June 30 (Sunday) for Remna Ni in Aizawl, Mizoram.
