Sunjay Kapur’s Sister Alleges Family Marginalized by Sona Comstar.

Mandhira Kapur Smith, sister of the late Sona Comstar Chairperson Sunjay Kapur, has raised concerns about how her family, particularly her 80-year-old mother Rani Kapur, has been treated by the automotive company founded by their late father. In an interview with ANI, Mandhira claimed the family has been “treated like strangers.”

“Within days, everything has been taken away from the family,” she said, adding that family members’ names were excluded from obituaries and public acknowledgments.

Mandhira highlighted her mother’s role in supporting Surinder Kapur as he expanded the business from its origins in the jewellery trade to a leading player in the automotive sector. Despite her contributions, Rani Kapur has reportedly been excluded from the company.

“There should have been respect for my mother, who is one of the founders with my father. Sona Comstar was built because of my father,” Mandhira said. She added that her mother should have been offered a non-executive board seat.

Escalating Dispute

The dispute between the Kapur family and Sona Comstar escalated after the company issued a cease-and-desist notice to Rani Kapur. In a letter to the board, Rani Kapur stated that she is the sole beneficiary of Surinder Kapur’s estate and the majority shareholder of the Sona Group, including Sona Comstar.

She also alleged she was pressured into signing documents approving the appointment of her daughter-in-law, Priya Sachdev Kapur, as a non-executive director on the company board. Sona Comstar responded, saying Rani Kapur has had no role in the company since 2019, either directly or indirectly.

Family Feels Ignored

Mandhira criticised the company for asking her mother to issue a public apology for requesting a delay in a board meeting following Sunjay Kapur’s death.

“She has been thrown to the curb. They have not cared about her or her feelings or that she stood by my father while he built the company,” Mandhira said.

She added, “For my mother, Sona is like another child. Asking for a delay in the board meeting was reasonable. She’s not a stranger.”

Mandhira emphasised that the issue is not just about money or business. “People who have not built it only see money. Those who built it, like us, see much more than that. We see a legacy, we see our dad’s dreams,” she said.

She also shared her mother’s ongoing grief over Sunjay Kapur’s sudden death. “He was fit. Who is giving her answers? My mum asks me every day, how did this happen?”

Sunjay Kapur, who led the Rs 30,000 crore mobility tech company, passed away on June 12 while playing polo in London. The autopsy reported cardiac arrest as the cause of death.
