All 582 passengers trapped in the Mumbai monorail due to a technical snag amid heavy Rains.
Were safely rescued after nearly four hours, officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said. The operation was carried out with support from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and the fire brigade on Tuesday evening.
Incident Details
The monorail, fully packed with passengers, came to a halt around 6:15 pm on its elevated track between Bhakti Park and Chembur stations near Mysore Colony due to a power supply issue. Emergency sky ladders were used to evacuate passengers safely.
Twelve passengers complained of suffocation and breathlessness during the ordeal and were hospitalised. Their condition is stable, and they are expected to be discharged soon.
A passenger recounted, “I was on the train from 5:30 pm. The rescue operation started after one hour. There were at least 500 passengers on the train. This train arrived after a gap of 30 minutes, so the entire train was overloaded.”
Government Response
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed he was in contact with officials and ordered an enquiry into the incident. He urged passengers to remain calm, assuring them of safe evacuation.
In a tweet, Fadnavis said:
“Due to some technical reason, a monorail is stuck between Chembur and Bhakti Park. MMRDA, fire brigade, and municipal corporation are on the spot. Safety of all passengers is the highest priority. All will be safely evacuated. Please remain patient.”
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde explained that the monorail was overcrowded because the Harbour Line was closed due to heavy rain, which, combined with a power breakdown, triggered the emergency brakes. He assured that measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
