US Open 2025: Alcaraz Faces Tough Road Despite Avoiding Sinner’s Half.
Carlos Alcaraz has been handed a challenging draw at the 2025 US Open, even after avoiding defending champion Jannik Sinner’s half. The Spaniard, aiming for a second Flushing Meadows crown, could face a high-stakes semi-final against Novak Djokovic if both progress as expected.
Alcaraz opens his campaign against Reilly Opelka and is placed in a demanding quarter alongside 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev, Toronto winner Ben Shelton, and 2022 finalist Casper Ruud. To reach the semifinals, he may need to overcome at least one of these in-form players. Djokovic, meanwhile, starts against Learner Tien and holds a 5-3 head-to-head lead over Alcaraz, having beaten him in the Australian Open quarter-finals earlier this year.
Sinner, on the other side of the draw, begins against Vit Kopriva and could meet Jack Draper in the quarters. Third seed Alexander Zverev may be Sinner’s semi-final opponent. The draw also features notable first-round matches, including 11th seed Holger Rune vs. Botic van de Zandschulp and 2014 champion Marin Cilic vs. Alexander Bublik.
Alcaraz comes into New York with six titles and a Tour-leading 54 wins this season but faces a challenging path to defend his title — and possibly clash with Sinner in the final.
Women’s Singles: Sabalenka, Swiatek Draw Challenges
Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka opens against Rebeka Masarova and faces a stacked top half including Jessica Pegula, Mirra Andreeva, and Jasmine Paolini. Potential clashes with Leylah Fernandez, Clara Tauson, and Elena Rybakina could follow in later rounds.
Second seed Iga Swiatek, aiming for a second US Open crown, starts against Emiliana Arango. She may meet Ekaterina Alexandrova in the last 16, Amanda Anisimova in the quarters, and Coco Gauff in the semifinals. Gauff, the 2023 champion, faces Ajla Tomljanovic first and could face Naomi Osaka, Madison Keys, or Daria Kasatkina along the way. Venus Williams, in what may be her final US Open, takes on 11th seed Karolina Muchova, 28 years after her first Flushing Meadows final.
The US Open 2025 promises high drama in both men’s and women’s draws, with several blockbuster clashes possible from the opening rounds.
