India Won’t Compromise on Farmers, Fishermen or Faith in Trade Pacts: Piyush Goyal.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday asserted that India will not compromise on protecting farmers, fishermen, and matters of faith while negotiating trade agreements with global partners.

Speaking at a business forum, Goyal said New Delhi remains committed to securing fair and balanced outcomes in free trade agreements (FTAs), but certain areas remain non-negotiable.

“Our farmers, our fishermen, and our cultural and faith-based sensitivities are sacrosanct. No trade deal will ever come at their expense,” the minister said, stressing that India is open to greater market access but will not accept terms that undermine livelihoods or social values.

Goyal also underlined that India seeks “win-win” outcomes in ongoing FTA talks with the UK, EU, and other economies. He highlighted that the government’s approach is to safeguard domestic interests while expanding India’s role in global supply chains.

The minister further noted that robust trade partnerships can help generate jobs, attract investment, and boost exports, but reiterated that India’s negotiating position is rooted in protecting vulnerable communities and national priorities.
