Income Tax Return Filing Deadline Extended by One Day to September 16.

The Income Tax Department on Monday announced a one-day extension for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2025-26, moving the deadline from September 15 to September 16, 2025. The original deadline had been July 31, which was extended once earlier this year.

In a press release, the department said:

“The due date for filing ITRs for AY 2025-26, originally set for July 31, 2025, was extended to September 15, 2025. The Central Board of Direct Taxes has now decided to further extend the due date to September 16, 2025.”

The extension comes as taxpayers faced persistent technical issues on the Income Tax e-filing portal, which hindered the completion of returns for many. To accommodate necessary updates, the e-filing portal will undergo maintenance from 12:00 am to 2:30 am on September 16, 2025.

Taxpayers are encouraged to file early to avoid last-minute glitches or penalties.

Over 7 Crore Returns Already Filed

The department highlighted that over 7 crore ITRs have already been submitted for AY 2025-26, surpassing last year’s 7.28 crore. “We sincerely thank taxpayers and professionals for their timely compliance. To facilitate further filings, the due date has been extended by one day,” the statement read.
