Suryakumar Yadav’s India Struggle but Prevail Against Bangladesh
Suryakumar Yadav’s India were far from their best on September 24, yet they proved too strong for Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium on Wednesday. Chasing 169, Bangladesh, fielding a B-string side with four changes to their preferred XI, were bowled out for 127, losing by 41 runs.
The defeat puts Bangladesh in a virtual knockout against Pakistan on Thursday, leaving them less than 24 hours to recover. This scheduling challenge likely influenced Bangladesh’s team selection, as they aimed to preserve key players for a match where their chances of success were higher. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka were officially eliminated from the tournament.
Bangladesh struggled with the bat from the outset. India’s new-ball duo, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah, struck early. Bumrah removed Tanzim Tamim in the second ball of his first over and then unsettled Parvez Emon, who replaced Litton Das. Emon took eight balls to get off the mark and was nearly bowled by an inswinging yorker that hit his pads outside leg stump. Bangladesh managed only 22 runs in the first four overs.
The innings gained some momentum when Suryakumar Yadav introduced spinner Varun Chakravarthy. Opener Saif Hassan and Emon attacked Chakravarthy, bringing some rhythm back to the innings. However, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, and Bangladesh were eventually bowled out for 127 in 19.3 overs.
India’s Fielding Woes Continue
India’s fielding, once a tournament strength under Virat Kohli, again let them down. Multiple dropped catches under the Dubai floodlights allowed Bangladesh to extend their innings. Fielding lapses have emerged as one of India’s biggest issues in the Asia Cup, and the team has yet to fully acknowledge the problem in post-match presentations and press conferences.
