US President Donald Trump on Sunday reiterated his firm stance on tariffs, announcing plans to distribute at least $2,000 to every American — excluding the wealthiest — using revenue collected from his administration’s trade duties.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump attacked critics of his tariff policies, calling them “FOOLS,” and hailed the United States as “the richest, most respected country in the world, with almost no inflation, and a record stock market.”
Trump claimed that tariffs have generated trillions of dollars in revenue, which will be used both to reduce the national debt, currently estimated at $37 trillion, and to issue a dividend to Americans. While the announcement highlighted a potential personal payout, he did not specify the timeline or the mechanism for distribution.
He also touted what he described as record-breaking economic indicators, noting that 401(k) balances are at all-time highs and highlighting increased domestic manufacturing activity.
The announcement comes amid ongoing legal scrutiny: the Supreme Court is reviewing challenges questioning whether Trump exceeded his executive powers in imposing broad tariffs on imports from nearly all major trading partners. Despite this, Trump has repeatedly defended tariffs as a central economic tool, insisting the policy strengthens the US economy and promotes greater national independence.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously noted that the administration aims to use tariff revenue to pay down the national debt, a strategy that Trump reaffirmed in his latest statement.
The $2,000 dividend proposal is expected to draw attention from both supporters and critics, as questions remain about how and when the payouts will be implemented.
