“Yunus Can’t Harm My Mother”: Sheikh Hasina’s Son Reacts to Death Verdict

Ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed, has said.

That Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus will not be able to harm his mother, rejecting the International Crimes Tribunal’s death sentence against her as illegal and politically motivated.

Hasina, currently in exile in India, was handed the death penalty on Monday in a case related to alleged crimes against humanity. Speaking to IANS, Wazed said the ruling would not stand once constitutional order is restored in Bangladesh.

“Yunus cannot touch my mother, and he cannot do anything to her,” Wazed said, calling the current administration “illegal and unconstitutional.” He added, “They will not be able to kill her. They can pass whatever verdict they want, but they cannot get her. Once there is rule of law, the entire process will be thrown out.”

He criticised the tribunal proceedings, alleging they were rushed, biased, and fundamentally flawed. Wazed claimed that the government amended laws without a functioning Parliament, dismissed 17 judges attached to the tribunal, and appointed a new judge who had previously made derogatory remarks about Hasina. He also alleged that Hasina was denied the right to appoint her own legal counsel and that the trial—completed in just 140 days—ignored basic judicial norms.

Calling the process “a mockery of justice,” he said, “There has been no due process. This is a joke.”

When asked whether Yunus should lose his Nobel Peace Prize in view of alleged human rights violations, Wazed noted that the Nobel Committee does not revoke awards but compared the situation to that of Aung San Suu Kyi. “The Peace Prize is given through lobbying. Suu Kyi won it and later oversaw atrocities against the Rohingya. Now Yunus is turning Bangladesh into a failed and extremist state,” he claimed.

Wazed also said India would protect Hasina regardless of political differences, pointing to India’s adherence to constitutional principles. “Whether it’s the Congress or BJP, India follows rule of law. They would have done the same to ensure her safety,” he added.
