The West Bengal government on Wednesday appointed senior IAS officer Nandini Chakravorty as the new Chief Secretary, making her the first woman to hold the post in the state.

Outgoing Chief Secretary Manoj Pant has been appointed Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

According to a notification issued by the Governor, “The Governor is pleased to appoint Smt. Nandini Chakravorty, IAS (WB:1994), Additional Chief Secretary, Home & Hill Affairs Department, with additional charge of Parliamentary Affairs and Tourism Departments, as Chief Secretary to the Government of West Bengal, until further orders, vice Dr. Manoj Pant, IAS, retiring on superannuation on December 31, 2025.”

A 1994-batch Indian Administrative Service officer, Chakravorty has held several key positions in the state administration over a distinguished career. She has previously served as Home Secretary, Tourism Secretary, and Principal Secretary to the Governor, besides handling important portfolios across industry, culture and governance. Her experience also includes stints in the Ministry of Personnel at the Centre and multiple postings as a District Magistrate.

With her appointment, Chakravorty creates history as the first woman Chief Secretary of West Bengal.

Meanwhile, Manoj Pant, who demits office on retirement later this year, has been appointed Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, a move seen as ensuring continuity and administrative support for the Chief Minister’s Office.
