South Africa Drop Tristan Stubbs, Ryan Rickelton from T20 World Cup Squad; Markram Named Captain.
South Africa have left Tristan Stubbs and Ryan Rickelton out of their 15-man squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with Aiden Markram appointed captain for the tournament in India and Sri Lanka, running from February 7 to March 8.
The Proteas’ selection panel opted for a mix of experience and emerging talent. The squad welcomes back Quinton de Kock, who recently ended his international retirement, and fast bowler Anrich Nortje, returning after injury. Kagiso Rabada also rejoins the T20I side following a rib injury that forced him out of South Africa’s recent white-ball tour of India. Seam options further include Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, and left-arm pacer Kwena Maphaka.
Stubbs’ exclusion is notable, as the young batter had established himself in South Africa’s white-ball setup, indicating the selectors’ preference for a different balance suited to subcontinent conditions. Rickelton, along with Reeza Hendricks, Ottneil Baartman, and Lutho Sipamla, were also left out.
“We have had to make some big calls, but we feel this group is the strongest and has every chance of succeeding in India and Sri Lanka,” said Proteas Men convenor Patrick Moroney. “We have assembled a world-class squad blending experienced players with some of the best T20 youngsters coming through.”
Seven players earn maiden T20 World Cup call-ups: Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, Donovan Ferreira, George Linde, Kwena Maphaka, and Jason Smith. Smith, a middle-order batter, impressed with recent domestic performances, including a 68 off 19 balls for the Dolphins in the SA T20 Challenge and a rapid 41 off 14 for MI Cape Town in the SA20.
South Africa are drawn in Group D alongside Afghanistan, New Zealand, Canada, and the UAE. They open their campaign against Canada in Ahmedabad on February 9.
Still chasing their first Men’s T20 World Cup title, the Proteas will look to build on last edition’s final appearance, where they lost narrowly to India. The squad retains experienced campaigners such as De Kock, David Miller, and Keshav Maharaj, while left-arm quick Maphaka continues his rise in the team.
Head coach Shukri Conrad highlighted the squad’s recent subcontinent experience as an advantage:
“Many players selected for the World Cup were part of our recent tour in India, gaining valuable exposure to the pitches we will likely face. We also have one more T20I series against the West Indies before the tournament, with that squad to be announced later this month.”
