Jemimah Rodrigues produced a composed unbeaten half-century under pressure to steer Delhi Capitals to a vital seven-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in Vadodara on Tuesday, January 20, keeping their playoff hopes alive.
Chasing 155, Delhi made an assertive start as Shafali Verma and Lizelle Lee added 61 for the first wicket. Shafali struck 29 before being bowled by Vaishnavi Sharma, while Lee looked set for a bigger score until a prolonged third-umpire review resulted in her stumping for 46, a decision that momentarily swung momentum Mumbai’s way. Delhi slipped to 76 for 2.
Rodrigues then took charge, anchoring the chase with assurance. She put together a steady stand with Laura Wolvaardt and absorbed pressure during a quiet middle phase as the asking rate crept up. The Delhi captain rotated strike efficiently and found timely boundaries to keep the chase under control.
The turning point came late in the innings. Rodrigues lifted Nat Sciver-Brunt for a six in the 16th over before attacking Hayley Matthews with innovative strokeplay. Her reverse lap for four in the 18th over brought up a measured half-century and left Delhi firmly on course.
Marizanne Kapp sealed the contest with a six off Sciver-Brunt, finishing the chase with an over to spare. Rodrigues remained unbeaten on 51 from 37 balls, with Kapp contributing 10 not out.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians recovered from early setbacks to post 154 for 5, built around Nat Sciver-Brunt’s 65 and Harmanpreet Kaur’s fluent 41. After Marizanne Kapp and Nandni Sharma reduced Mumbai to 23 for 2, the pair rebuilt steadily. Harmanpreet dominated the spinners before falling to Shree Charani, while Sciver-Brunt anchored the innings to the finish.
Delhi’s bowlers kept their discipline at the death, conceding just 11 runs across the 18th and 19th overs to ensure the target remained within reach.
In the end, Rodrigues’ calm presence and finishing ability proved decisive as Delhi Capitals stayed alive in the playoff race with a controlled, pressure-tested win.
