How Alcohol Can Affect Men’s Sexual Performance

Many people drink to relax or boost confidence, and it’s common to assume that alcohol might help in intimate moments. While a drink or two can temporarily reduce inhibitions, for some men, alcohol can have the opposite effect — interfering with sexual performance and arousal. In everyday terms, this is often called “whiskey dick,” describing alcohol-induced difficulty in achieving or maintaining an erection.

Dr P Vamsi Krishna, clinical director and senior consultant at CARE Hospitals, Hyderabad, explains that temporary erectile difficulty after drinking is usually short-lived.

“Alcohol is a depressant, so it slows nerve signals and affects blood flow, both essential for an erection. Even moderate drinking can cause this in some men, especially if they’re tired, stressed, or dehydrated. Heavier drinking increases the likelihood. Most men will experience this at least once in their lives, even if they don’t have ongoing erectile problems,” he says.

Physiologically, alcohol temporarily lowers testosterone levels and dulls the brain’s response to sexual stimulation. While it might increase perceived desire, it often reduces the body’s ability to respond, creating a frustrating disconnect between mental interest and physical performance.

This can be embarrassing, particularly because alcohol often accompanies dates, celebrations, or intimate evenings. Dr Krishna notes, “Some men start worrying it might happen again, and that anxiety itself can affect the next experience. Partners may misinterpret it as a lack of interest or attraction. If not addressed, it can slowly impact confidence and communication.”

Occasional alcohol-related erectile difficulty isn’t a medical condition and usually improves with simple lifestyle adjustments: reducing alcohol intake, staying hydrated, eating well, and getting enough rest. However, if erectile issues occur even without alcohol or become frequent, a medical evaluation is recommended.

As a guideline, consuming more than two standard drinks at a time increases the risk, while heavy regular drinking can cause longer-term effects on erections by damaging blood vessels, nerves, and hormone levels.

Simple strategies like spacing out drinks, having alcohol-free days, and moderating intake can help maintain sexual performance and confidence.
