Manchester United produced a stirring second-half comeback to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 on Sunday, climbing into third place in the Premier League standings.
Captain Bruno Fernandes led the charge, calmly converting a penalty before delivering a pinpoint free kick that Benjamin Sesko headed home to complete the turnaround against 10-man Palace. The victory extended interim manager Michael Carrick’s unbeaten run to seven matches since taking charge in mid-January. United now sit on 51 points from 28 games, while Palace remain 14th on 35.
It is the first time United have been in the top three since May 2023, continuing a strong resurgence following the January 5 departure of Ruben Amorim.
“It feels like a big result. We were behind and had to show some character,” Fernandes told Sky Sports. “There are a lot of games still to go. We need to keep pushing and make as many points as we can.”
Palace Strike Early
Palace dominated the opening half-hour, capitalising on United’s sluggish start. The hosts were caught cold inside four minutes when Maxence Lacroix muscled past Leny Yoro to power home a header from a corner — the earliest goal United have conceded this season.
Palace nearly doubled their advantage soon after. Daniel Munoz raced onto a through ball from Ismaila Sarr, but goalkeeper Senne Lammens produced a crucial save.
United gradually settled. Sesko tested Dean Henderson with a header before the break, while Fernandes saw a free kick tipped over the bar as the hosts ended the half on a stronger note.
The Comeback
United emerged with greater urgency after the restart.
In the 57th minute, Fernandes restored parity from the penalty spot after Matheus Cunha was pulled down by Lacroix. Following a lengthy VAR review, the Palace defender was shown a red card, reducing the visitors to 10 men.
The momentum shifted decisively.
Eight minutes later, Fernandes delivered again — this time with a perfectly weighted free kick that Sesko met with a powerful header to complete the turnaround.
United had opportunities to extend their lead. Casemiro forced a diving save with a fierce volley, while substitute Amad Diallo tested Henderson from distance. Joshua Zirkzee saw efforts blocked, and Kobbie Mainoo fired narrowly wide.
Carrick praised his side’s response to adversity.
“The biggest thing for us is how we reacted at halftime,” he said. “You’re not always going to have it your own way, but the personality and belief we showed in the second half was outstanding.”
Palace, managed by Oliver Glasner, pushed late on but could not find an equaliser.
“It feels like there was more possible today,” Glasner said. “The red card changed the game completely, and the second goal came too quickly after.”
For United, however, it was another statement result — resilience under pressure, momentum building, and a return to the Premier League’s top three.
