Vikram Doraiswami Named India’s New Ambassador to China: All You Need to Know

Vikram Doraiswami, currently serving as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, has been appointed.

As the country’s next ambassador to China, the Ministry of External Affairs announced on Thursday. He will succeed Pradeep Kumar Rawat as India’s envoy in Beijing and is expected to take charge shortly.

The appointment comes at a crucial time, as New Delhi and Beijing continue efforts to stabilise ties following the prolonged military tensions in eastern Ladakh. Relations had sharply deteriorated after the Galwan Valley clash, before both sides moved towards disengagement and diplomatic reset in recent months.

A seasoned diplomat with China experience

A 1992-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Doraiswami brings extensive diplomatic experience, including prior postings in China. An alumnus of University of Delhi with a master’s degree in history, he briefly worked as a journalist before joining the foreign service.

He began his diplomatic career in Hong Kong in 1994 and later served in Beijing from 1996 to 2000, where he also studied the Chinese language.

Key roles across continents

Over the years, Doraiswami has held several important assignments, including roles at India’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York and at the Consulate General in Johannesburg. He has also served in the Prime Minister’s Office and handled key divisions within the MEA, including SAARC and the Americas.

He went on to serve as India’s ambassador to Uzbekistan and later to South Korea, before returning to New Delhi in senior roles overseeing international organisations and regional divisions.

Recent diplomatic assignments

Before his posting to the UK in 2022, Doraiswami served as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh from 2020 to 2022. His tenure there came during a critical phase in India’s neighbourhood diplomacy.

With his experience across key geographies and prior exposure to China, Doraiswami’s appointment is seen as significant as India looks to carefully manage and rebuild its complex relationship with Beijing.
