Jonathan Wheatley leaves Audi F1 with immediate effect as Aston Martin links swirl
Jonathan Wheatley has stepped down as team principal of Audi’s Formula One outfit with immediate effect, the Swiss-based team confirmed on Friday. Mattia Binotto will take over the role while continuing his existing responsibilities within the project.
Audi kept its statement brief, citing personal reasons for Wheatley’s sudden departure. “The team thanks Jonathan for his contribution to the project and wishes him the best for his future endeavours,” it said.
The timing of the exit has intensified speculation linking Wheatley with a potential move to Aston Martin. Reports had suggested he could replace Adrian Newey as team principal, allowing Newey to focus solely on technical duties. However, Aston Martin firmly dismissed the claims, reiterating that Newey remains in charge as Team Principal and Managing Technical Partner.
New structure at Audi
Binotto, who joined in 2024 to lead Audi’s F1 project, has been central to the team’s transition into a full works outfit. He has overseen Audi’s evolution into a constructor responsible for both chassis and power unit development, and will now formally add team principal duties to his remit.
Wheatley’s short stint
Wheatley arrived from Red Bull Racing, where he enjoyed a long and successful spell as sporting director, working closely with Newey during the team’s dominant years. He joined Audi’s predecessor, Sauber, in April last year, but his tenure at the helm has proven brief.
Now a free agent, Wheatley’s next move will be closely watched across the paddock. Aston Martin, currently struggling for performance and yet to score points this season, remains a team under scrutiny—with Fernando Alonso even reporting physical discomfort during the Chinese Grand Prix due to severe car vibrations.
