Shreyas Iyer opens up on gruelling injury comeback, eyes IPL glory with Punjab Kings
Shreyas Iyer has reflected on one of the toughest phases of his career, revealing he lost nearly seven kilos while recovering from a serious injury as he gears up to lead Punjab Kings in the 2026 season.
Speaking at a team press conference in Chandigarh, the India ODI vice-captain spoke candidly about the physical and mental toll of his recovery journey.
“It is always challenging to come back after an injury. I had lost around seven kilos and it took a lot of effort to gain that weight back,” Iyer said.
“But I love challenges. I am glad I overcame that part of my life, and I am back here proudly representing the team.”
Injury setback and recovery
Iyer suffered a spleen injury during India’s series against Australia national cricket team in October 2025, ruling him out for nearly two months. The setback forced him to miss the ODI series against South Africa national cricket team and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, interrupting his rhythm at a crucial stage.
He completed rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru before making his return to competitive cricket in early 2026. His comeback was highlighted by a fluent 82 off 53 balls for Mumbai cricket team in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, signalling a strong return.
Though his initial outings post-recovery drew mixed reactions, Iyer gradually regained form and match fitness heading into a packed season.
Leadership focus with PBKS
Now, his attention shifts to the IPL, where he will captain Punjab Kings with a clear objective. The franchise came close to ending their title drought last year, finishing runners-up to Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Having previously led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title, Iyer brings proven leadership credentials into the season. With a settled squad and momentum on their side, Punjab Kings will be aiming to go one step further.
For Iyer, the mission is simple—build on last year’s near-miss and deliver a maiden IPL title, capping a remarkable comeback from adversity.
