Pappu Yadav defends ‘exploitation’ remark, claims many MPs watch porn

Independent MP Pappu Yadav has ignited a fresh political controversy, claiming that “70–80 per cent of politicians watch porn” while defending his earlier remarks on the alleged exploitation of women in politics.

The row comes amid the fallout of the Constitution (131st) Amendment Bill’s defeat in Parliament — a proposal linked to women’s reservation and delimitation — after it failed to secure the required two-thirds majority.

‘Systemic bias against women’

The Purnia MP argued that women continue to face deep-rooted discrimination in public life. He alleged that many aspiring female politicians encounter exploitation, questioning whether the system truly allows women to participate on equal terms.

Remarks escalate row

Speaking in Malda, Yadav doubled down on his controversial statements, hitting back at those who issued notices against him. He repeated his claim about politicians consuming explicit content and challenged authorities to examine his own devices if needed.

He insisted his comments were meant to highlight uncomfortable realities, alleging that misuse of power by male politicians remains a serious issue.

Debate over women’s quota

Yadav’s remarks come at a time when the debate over women’s representation has intensified. The Constitution (131st) Amendment Bill — which proposed 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies from 2029 — failed despite receiving 298 votes in favour and 230 against.

His statements have drawn sharp reactions, with critics calling them objectionable, while others say they have reignited discussions on gender inequality and the challenges faced by women in politics.
