Twisha Sharma’s death appears to be a case of suicide and not murder, the Bhopal Police said on Tuesday, pushing back against allegations made by her family regarding foul play and dowry harassment.

Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar said that findings from the post-mortem examination and evidence gathered so far indicate death by suicide. According to investigators, the forensic report points to “ante-mortem hanging”, suggesting that Sharma was alive at the time of hanging, with no evidence currently supporting a murder angle.

“What we have found so far from the post-mortem report and other evidence that we have collected is that it is a case of suicide and not of murder,” Kumar said.

The 33-year-old, a resident of Noida, was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12, just months after marrying advocate Samarth Singh in December 2025.

Her family has alleged that she faced mental harassment and dowry-related abuse from her husband and in-laws after the marriage. The allegations triggered widespread attention and prompted the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances surrounding her death.

Police also dismissed claims made by Sharma’s mother-in-law, retired judge Giribala Singh, who had alleged that the deceased was struggling with drug addiction. Commissioner Kumar said neither the post-mortem findings nor the investigation had uncovered any evidence suggesting drug use.

“There is nothing about drugs in the post-mortem report. In our investigation too, we have not found any such things,” he said.

Despite the police findings so far, the case remains under intense scrutiny. Sharma’s husband Samarth Singh and his mother have both been named as accused, while Samarth has reportedly remained untraceable since the incident.

Authorities have issued a lookout notice against him and initiated proceedings to cancel his passport.

Meanwhile, Sharma’s family has continued to challenge the official findings, demanding a fresh post-mortem examination and alleging visible injuries on her body. The family has also sought judicial intervention, raising concerns about the fairness and transparency of the investigation.

The SIT investigation remains ongoing as police continue to examine all aspects of the case amid conflicting claims from the victim’s family and her in-laws.
