Punjab Kings head into their final league clash against Lucknow Super Giants with their IPL 2026 playoff hopes hanging by a thread.
What once looked like a campaign destined for a top-two finish has suddenly turned into a desperate fight for survival after six consecutive defeats pushed Shreyas Iyer’s side out of the top four.
A month ago, Punjab were among the most feared batting units in the tournament. Their stunning chase of 265 against Delhi Capitals highlighted the fearless approach that powered them through the first half of the season. With six wins in their opening seven games, PBKS looked well on course for a comfortable playoff qualification.
But the momentum has disappeared rapidly. Repeated failures with both bat and ball have dragged Punjab into a must-win scenario heading into Saturday’s clash in Lucknow. Even a victory may not guarantee qualification, leaving PBKS dependent on other results in the final round of league matches.
PBKS SEARCH FOR ANSWERS
Punjab’s aggressive starts were once the foundation of their success, with Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh consistently dominating the powerplay. That rhythm has faded badly during the losing streak, placing added pressure on the middle order.
Priyansh has struggled for consistency in recent matches, while Prabhsimran too has failed to maintain the impact he produced earlier in the tournament. Whenever Punjab lose wickets inside the powerplay now, the innings tends to slow down significantly.
Captain Shreyas Iyer’s dip in form has only increased the concerns. After leading from the front during PBKS’ winning run, Shreyas has found it difficult to anchor innings during the recent slide. Without his stability in the middle order, Punjab’s batting has looked increasingly fragile under pressure.
The bowling unit has faced similar problems. Arshdeep Singh and Lockie Ferguson have struggled to control the death overs consistently, while Yuzvendra Chahal’s performances have fluctuated sharply throughout the season. Punjab’s fielding has also hurt them in key moments, with missed chances proving costly in tight matches.
There have still been a few positives. Azmatullah Omarzai has impressed with both bat and ball, while Shashank Singh’s fighting knock against Royal Challengers Bengaluru showed that Punjab still possess the firepower to recover if their top players rediscover form.
LSG AIM TO FINISH STRONGLY
Lucknow Super Giants may already be out of the playoff race, but they remain dangerous opponents, particularly at the Ekana Stadium. Recent home victories against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings showed LSG are capable of upsetting teams still chasing qualification.
Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis gave Lucknow a flying start against Rajasthan Royals in the previous match, while Nicholas Pooran has also regained some form after a quiet middle phase of the season.
There will also be focus on captain Rishabh Pant, whose campaign has largely failed to meet expectations. Pant will be eager to finish the season strongly in front of the home crowd after an inconsistent year with both bat and leadership.
PLAYOFF EQUATION FOR PBKS
Punjab Kings must beat Lucknow Super Giants to remain in contention for the playoffs. However, qualification also depends on results elsewhere.
PBKS need Mumbai Indians to defeat Rajasthan Royals, while Kolkata Knight Riders must not finish ahead of them on either points or net run rate after their final league fixture. Punjab currently hold a slight advantage over KKR in net run rate, which could still prove decisive.
HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD
Punjab Kings hold a narrow 4-3 advantage over Lucknow Super Giants overall and have won each of the last three meetings between the teams. Earlier this season, PBKS hammered 254 against LSG in Mullanpur during one of the highest-scoring matches of IPL 2026.
PITCH AND CONDITIONS
Lucknow is expected to experience another extremely hot day, although temperatures should ease slightly by the evening.
The Ekana Stadium initially produced slow, bowler-friendly surfaces earlier in the season, but recent matches have seen batting conditions improve considerably. Teams chasing have enjoyed notable success at the venue, with sides batting second winning most games here since IPL 2025.
Pacers could still find some assistance with the new ball under lights, but once batters settle in, stroke-making is expected to become easier.
TEAM NEWS
Lucknow Super Giants are unlikely to have Aiden Markram available after the South African opener returned home due to personal reasons. Mohammed Shami also missed the previous game, although the franchise has not provided any fresh update regarding his availability.
Punjab Kings have reported no injury concerns ahead of the crucial encounter.
