PSG’s Champions League Glory Overshadowed by Riots, Arrests and Fatal Incident Across France

Paris Saint-Germain’s successful defence of their UEFA Champions League crown was overshadowed by widespread unrest across France, with celebrations following the club’s victory over Arsenal descending into violence, vandalism and tragedy.

PSG clinched their second consecutive Champions League title on Saturday night in Budapest, defeating Arsenal 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the two sides were locked at 1-1 following extra time. The triumph sparked celebrations among supporters across France, but in several cities the festivities quickly spiralled out of control.

Hundreds Arrested as Clashes Break Out

French authorities reported major disturbances in multiple parts of the country overnight. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said 780 people were arrested as police responded to incidents ranging from vandalism and looting to arson and attacks on security personnel.

According to officials, 57 members of the security forces and 219 civilians were injured during the unrest, with eight people sustaining serious injuries. Authorities also noted an increase in the use of fireworks and other projectiles directed at police officers.

Disorder was reported in at least 71 municipalities, while thefts and looting were recorded in around 15 cities.

Paris Sees Major Flashpoints

The most significant incidents occurred in Paris, where tens of thousands of supporters gathered following the final.

Videos circulating on social media showed scenes of chaos, including burning vehicles, damaged storefronts and flares lighting up streets in the French capital. Clashes were also reported near the Champs-Élysées, one of the main gathering points for PSG supporters after the match.

Authorities said a bakery and a restaurant near PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium suffered damage during the disturbances.

Earlier in the evening, between 4,000 and 5,000 supporters had assembled outside the stadium. Police said officers came under attack from projectiles, while around 150 individuals attempted to force entry through one of the venue’s gates before being dispersed.

Fatal Incident and Serious Injuries

Amid the celebrations, tragedy struck in Paris when a man in his twenties died in a traffic accident.

According to the Paris public prosecutor’s office, the victim crashed his motocross bike into concrete barriers at an exit ramp on the city’s ring road. Investigators said supporters had earlier blocked traffic in the area while setting off flares.

In a separate incident, another young man suffered serious injuries in a knife attack reportedly linked to an attempted robbery.

Massive Security Operation

French authorities had deployed around 22,000 police officers and security personnel across the country ahead of the final, anticipating large-scale celebrations and the possibility of public disorder.

Additional crowd-control measures, transport restrictions and security cordons were implemented in Paris and other major cities. Despite those precautions, officials acknowledged that the scale and spread of the disturbances created significant challenges for law enforcement agencies overnight.

What was expected to be a night celebrating PSG’s latest European triumph instead ended with widespread damage, hundreds of arrests and a fatality, casting a shadow over one of the club’s biggest achievements on the continental stage.
