R Praggnanandhaa Creates History, Becomes First Indian to Win Norway Chess Title

Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa etched his name into the record books on Sunday by becoming the first Indian to win the prestigious Norway Chess title. The 20-year-old completed a stunning comeback campaign in Oslo, defeating Vincent Keymer in the final round to clinch one of the biggest trophies in world chess.

The triumph is one of the most significant achievements of Praggnanandhaa’s career, given the strength of the field that included World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, reigning world champion D Gukesh, Alireza Firouzja, Wesley So and Keymer.

Praggnanandhaa entered the final day in a tightly contested title race and held his nerve when it mattered most. His victory over Keymer ensured he stayed ahead of his rivals, while So’s Armageddon win over Firouzja proved insufficient to deny the Indian youngster the championship.

Stunning Turnaround After Mid-Tournament Setbacks

The title appeared out of reach at one stage as Praggnanandhaa struggled for consistency in the middle rounds. However, he produced a remarkable resurgence, collecting crucial classical victories against some of the strongest players in the field.

Victories over Firouzja, Carlsen and Gukesh propelled him back into contention, with his Round 9 win over Gukesh proving particularly crucial in setting up a dramatic final-round showdown.

Dominance Over Magnus Carlsen

One of the standout stories of the tournament was Praggnanandhaa’s success against Carlsen. The Indian star defeated the Norwegian icon twice in classical games during the event, a feat previously achieved only by Indian legend Viswanathan Anand in a single tournament.

Those victories highlighted Praggnanandhaa’s growing stature on the global stage and reinforced his reputation as one of the most formidable young players in world chess.

A New Milestone in Indian Chess

Already regarded as a leading figure in India’s new generation of chess stars, Praggnanandhaa has continued to build on his rapid rise through the ranks. With qualification for the Candidates Tournament secured and several elite-level performances to his name, the Norway Chess crown now stands as one of the biggest achievements of his career.

His historic success in Oslo adds another landmark chapter to India’s rich chess legacy and further cements his place among the game’s elite players.
