‘You’re Not Supposed To Say That’: Jaishankar’s Humorous Exchange With Finnish FM Goes Viral
A light-hearted exchange between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen has emerged as one of the most talked-about moments from the Indian minister’s visit to Finland, drawing widespread attention on social media.
The interaction occurred during a joint media briefing following bilateral talks between the two leaders. While discussing cooperation between the two countries, Valtonen jokingly remarked that India and Finland had signed “many deals.”
Before she could continue, Jaishankar quickly interjected with a smile: “You’re not supposed to say that.”
The unexpected response caught Valtonen by surprise and sparked laughter among those present. Her amused reaction, combined with Jaishankar’s deadpan delivery, soon turned the clip into a viral social media moment.
Social media reacts
The video quickly spread across platforms, with users praising the chemistry between the two ministers and Jaishankar’s trademark wit.
Many described the exchange as a refreshing example of diplomacy mixed with humour, while others highlighted Valtonen’s spontaneous reaction as one of the most endearing moments from the visit.
Despite the visit involving discussions on defence cooperation, security, trade and global affairs, it was this brief unscripted interaction that captured the public’s imagination online.
Another viral moment
The exchange with Valtonen was not the only instance where Jaishankar’s humour drew attention.
During another discussion, UAE Assistant Foreign Minister Lana Nusseibeh jokingly observed that it had been “a really quiet time” in her region, a reference to the often turbulent geopolitical situation in West Asia.
Without missing a beat, Jaishankar replied, “That’s why you came here to Finland.”
The remark once again triggered laughter among participants and quickly found its way onto social media, further adding to the minister’s growing collection of viral diplomatic one-liners.
Finland backs India’s position on Russian oil
Beyond the viral moments, the visit also featured substantive discussions on global energy security and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Speaking at the Kultaranta Talks, Valtonen publicly defended India’s continued purchases of Russian oil, noting that New Delhi had operated within the framework of the price cap introduced by Western nations following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“In India’s defence, it has bought oil under the price cap. That was the intention,” she said.
Valtonen explained that the price-cap mechanism was designed not to halt global purchases of Russian crude entirely, but to ensure stable supplies while limiting Moscow’s profits.
Her remarks came as Jaishankar reiterated India’s long-standing position that energy security remains a priority and defended New Delhi’s decisions regarding oil imports.
While discussions during the visit covered a range of strategic issues—from defence and international cooperation to energy and geopolitics—it was Jaishankar’s quick wit and informal exchanges that ultimately stole the spotlight online.
