PM Modi, Merz Discuss Trade, Defence And Technology Cooperation At G7 Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian on Wednesday, with both leaders exploring ways to expand cooperation across a range of strategic sectors and strengthen the long-standing partnership between India and Germany.
Following the meeting, PM Modi described the discussions as “very fruitful” and highlighted the broad scope of cooperation under consideration. In a post on X, the Prime Minister said the two leaders discussed measures to deepen engagement in trade, investment, circular economy, defence, information technology and other key areas.
“We discussed ways to further cement bilateral cooperation by working together in trade, investments, circular economy, defence, IT and more,” Modi said, adding that enhancing cultural exchanges between the two countries also featured prominently in the talks.
Focus On Strategic Partnership
The meeting came shortly after PM Modi’s address at the G7 outreach session, where he stressed the need for stronger global support mechanisms to help developing nations navigate economic and social challenges.
Providing details of the bilateral engagement, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the two leaders expressed satisfaction over the renewed momentum in the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, particularly as the two countries commemorate 75 years of diplomatic relations.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in trade and investment, defence and security, green and sustainable development, technology, innovation, education and mobility.
India-EU Trade Deal Also Discussed
A key point of discussion was the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement, which both leaders believe could provide a significant boost to bilateral economic ties.
“The leaders agreed that early implementation of the India-EU FTA will further deepen India-Germany ties,” Jaiswal said, adding that the discussions also covered several regional and global developments of mutual interest.
The meeting reflects growing engagement between India and Germany as both countries seek to strengthen economic, technological and strategic cooperation amid an evolving global landscape.
