DR Congo’s Viral Superfan Finally Reaches World Cup, But Colombia Spoil the Party

The FIFA World Cup finally welcomed one of football’s most recognizable supporters as DR Congo superfan Michel Kuka Mboladinga, popularly known as “Lumumba Vea,” arrived in Mexico to cheer on his team. However, his much-anticipated appearance could not inspire the result DR Congo needed, as Colombia secured a narrow victory to book their place in the knockout stage.

Mboladinga, who became an internet sensation during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, was in the stands for DR Congo’s Group K clash against Colombia in Guadalajara after missing the team’s opening match against Portugal due to travel restrictions linked to the Ebola outbreak.

The Fan Who Became a Global Attraction

Known for his distinctive tribute to Congolese independence leader Patrice Lumumba, Mboladinga attends matches dressed in a suit and tie while standing motionless with one arm raised. The unique gesture has turned him into a cult figure among football fans worldwide and one of the most talked-about supporters at this World Cup.

His delayed arrival had already become a storyline of the tournament, and fans were eager to see the iconic supporter finally take his place in the stands.

Colombia Seal Knockout Spot

On the pitch, DR Congo put up a spirited fight against a talented Colombian side featuring stars such as James Rodriguez and Luis Diaz.

Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi emerged as DR Congo’s standout performer, producing a string of impressive saves to keep Colombia at bay for much of the contest. Despite Colombia dominating possession and creating numerous chances, the African side looked capable of securing a valuable point.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 76th minute when Daniel Munoz latched onto a precise pass from Juan Quintero and finished clinically past Mpasi to hand Colombia a 1-0 victory.

DR Congo’s Qualification Hopes Still Alive

The win moved Colombia to six points and secured their passage to the Round of 32 with a game to spare. DR Congo, meanwhile, remain in contention for a knockout berth despite the defeat.

Their fate now rests on the final group-stage match against Uzbekistan, where victory could still keep their World Cup dream alive.

And should DR Congo advance, their famous supporter “Lumumba Vea” may yet witness another unforgettable chapter in his team’s remarkable journey.
