Pregnant Telangana Woman Dies by Suicide; Husband, Mother-in-Law Arrested

A 23-year-old pregnant woman allegedly died by suicide in Telangana’s Medak district after facing repeated harassment from her husband and mother-in-law, who are accused of questioning the paternity of her unborn child and demanding a DNA test.

The incident took place in Gadipeddapur village in Alladurg mandal. The deceased, identified as Sushmita, had been married to G. Abhilash for around 18 months and was five months pregnant at the time of her death.

Family Alleges Harassment Over Pregnancy

According to a complaint filed by Sushmita’s mother, Janabai, her daughter had been subjected to both physical and mental harassment by her husband, who allegedly doubted her fidelity. The complaint also alleges that Sushmita was mistreated by her mother-in-law.

Janabai told police that she and her husband visited their daughter’s home on June 23 to discuss arrangements for her baby shower ceremony. During the meeting, an argument allegedly broke out, with Abhilash demanding a DNA test for the unborn child in the presence of both families.

Although community elders intervened and temporarily resolved the dispute, the family alleged that the harassment continued. Two days later, Sushmita was found hanging at her residence.

Janabai has sought a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s death.

Husband, Mother-in-Law Arrested

Police shifted Sushmita’s body to Sangareddy Government General Hospital for a post-mortem examination before handing it over to her family.

“We arrested her husband G. Abhilash and his mother. They were produced before the magistrate and remanded to judicial custody,” Alladurg Police Station Sub-Inspector D. Shankar said.

Based on the complaint lodged by the victim’s mother, police have registered a case under Sections 85 (cruelty by husband or relatives), 108 (abetment of suicide), and Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with acts committed with common intention.
