Kylian Mbappe Fires France Into World Cup Quarter-finals With Winner Against Paraguay

Kylian Mbappe delivered when France needed him most, calmly converting a second-half penalty to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over a resilient Paraguay and book Les Bleus’ place in the World Cup quarter-finals on Friday.

For more than an hour, Gustavo Alfaro’s disciplined side frustrated one of the tournament favourites, turning the Round of 16 clash into a physical, tactical battle in sweltering 38°C conditions. Fresh from their penalty shootout upset over Germany, Paraguay refused to be overawed, limiting France’s star-studded attack to few clear opportunities.

But with 20 minutes remaining, substitute Desire Doue changed the complexion of the contest.

The youngster burst into the penalty area before being brought down by Diego Gomez. Referee Ilgiz Tantashev initially waved play on, only to reverse his decision after a VAR review. Mbappe stepped up and coolly slotted home from the spot, sending goalkeeper Orlando Gill the wrong way to score his seventh goal of the tournament and draw level with Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race.

The strike was enough to send Didier Deschamps’ men into a quarter-final against Morocco while bringing Paraguay’s inspiring World Cup run to an end.

Paraguay Frustrate France

France entered the knockout tie full of confidence after dismantling Sweden in the previous round, with Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise and Bradley Barcola expected to overwhelm another opponent.

Instead, Paraguay produced one of the tournament’s most disciplined defensive displays.

Content to sit deep and surrender possession, the South Americans packed central areas and denied France any space behind the defence. Mbappe was constantly surrounded, Dembele found himself double-marked and Olise repeatedly ran into a wall of white shirts.

Despite dominating possession, France struggled to create meaningful chances. By half-time, Les Bleus had enjoyed more than 80 per cent of the ball but failed to register a shot on target, highlighting Paraguay’s remarkable defensive organisation.

Every attack was slowed by tactical fouls, strong challenges and relentless defensive discipline as France grew increasingly frustrated.

Physical Battle

The contest became increasingly heated as Paraguay looked to disrupt France’s rhythm at every opportunity.

Mbappe bore the brunt of the physical treatment, repeatedly brought down and involved in several flashpoints, including a confrontation with Andres Cubas after another heavy tackle. France were also left angered when appeals for a first-half penalty after Juan Caceres appeared to hold Mbappe inside the box were dismissed.

Deschamps admitted afterwards that he expected Paraguay’s aggressive approach.

“They use every trick in the book,” the France coach said. “It’s not the kind of football that will bring people to the stadium, but they defended very well. These South American teams are always difficult to play.”

He even revealed instructing two of his tallest players to stay close to Mbappe during the closing stages.

“I asked the two biggest lads to stay around Kylian because they were going to chop him down,” he said.

Doue Makes The Difference

With France struggling to find a breakthrough, Deschamps introduced Desire Doue midway through the second half.

The substitute immediately brought greater urgency and directness, repeatedly driving at Paraguay’s defence instead of recycling possession around the edge of the penalty area.

His willingness to attack defenders proved decisive when Gomez clipped him inside the box. Following a VAR review, Mbappe made no mistake from the penalty spot, finally breaking Paraguay’s stubborn resistance.

France nearly added a second as Gill produced several fine saves, twice denying Mbappe, while Paraguay were forced to abandon their defensive game plan in search of an equaliser. However, the South Americans managed only one shot on target in the closing stages as fatigue and the oppressive heat took their toll.

France Progress, Paraguay Depart With Pride

Although Paraguay’s World Cup campaign ended in defeat, Alfaro’s side left the tournament with their reputation enhanced. After eliminating Germany on penalties and pushing France to the limit, they proved that discipline, organisation and determination could unsettle even the competition’s strongest teams.

France, meanwhile, advance to the last eight without producing their most convincing performance.

Deschamps’ side will now face Morocco in a repeat of the 2022 World Cup semi-final, knowing sterner challenges await. Against Paraguay, they required patience, a game-changing substitute and Mbappe’s composure from the penalty spot to keep their World Cup dream alive.
