Monsoon Havoc Across India: Delhi Waterlogged, Surat Flooded, Landslides Hit Uttarakhand, Kerala.
Torrential monsoon rains wreaked havoc across several parts of India on Wednesday and Thursday, triggering floods, landslides, a building collapse and widespread disruption to road and rail services. Rescue teams were deployed across affected regions, thousands of people were shifted to safer locations, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue in the coming days.
As the weather situation worsened, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the chief ministers of Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir, assuring them of all possible assistance from the Centre. The impact of the intense monsoon was felt across Delhi-NCR, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan, prompting authorities to remain on high alert.
Delhi-NCR Battles Waterlogging, Traffic Chaos
Delhi witnessed one of its heaviest spells of rain this season overnight, inundating roads and throwing traffic out of gear. The IMD issued red and orange alerts for thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and lightning. Several parts of the capital, including Sadar Bazar, Greater Kailash, Badarpur, Nasirpur, Swarup Nagar and Kushak Road, reported severe waterlogging, while traffic crawled along Ring Road, Outer Ring Road and NH-48.
In Rohini, three people were killed after a newly constructed four-storey building collapsed. Civic officials said preliminary findings pointed to structural damage caused during plumbing work, with no immediate evidence linking the collapse to the heavy rain.
Neighbouring Gurugram also witnessed widespread flooding, with major roads submerged and long traffic jams reported on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway service lane, Sohna Road, Basai, Kadipur and several other stretches.
Mumbai Rains Disrupt Transport, Rescue Ops Continue
In Maharashtra, heavy rain continued to lash Mumbai, delaying suburban train services and affecting daily commuters. Long-distance trains bound for Gujarat were disrupted due to waterlogging on railway tracks, while landslides in the Bhor Ghat section impacted services on the Mumbai-Pune route.
Meanwhile, rescue operations were underway in Pimpri Chinchwad after a massive garbage mound collapsed following heavy rain, with 11 people feared trapped beneath the debris.
Surat Flooded, Nine Dead
Gujarat’s Surat remained inundated after days of relentless rainfall. Officials said at least nine people have died in rain-related incidents, while thousands of residents from low-lying areas were evacuated to safer locations. Rescue teams distributed food and essential supplies to people stranded in flooded residential buildings as large parts of the city remained submerged.
Landslides and Flash Floods Hit Kerala, J&K
In Kerala’s Wayanad district, search operations continued for five workers who went missing after a mound of rain-soaked excavated earth collapsed at a tunnel construction site. Rescue efforts have been slowed by intermittent rainfall.
In Jammu and Kashmir, flash floods triggered by heavy rain affected parts of Doda district, prompting emergency response measures. The situation was also reviewed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his conversation with the Chief Minister.
More Heavy Rain Forecast
Rajasthan also continued to receive widespread rainfall, with Ramganj Mandi in Kota district recording the highest rainfall in the state. The IMD has forecast heavy rain across several regions over the next two to three days, warning of possible flooding, landslides and further disruption.
With the southwest monsoon intensifying across northern, western and southern India, authorities remain on alert as heavy rainfall is expected to persist in multiple states.
