Israel has shared fresh intelligence with the United States alleging a new Iranian plot to assassinate.
US President Donald Trump, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. The reported warning comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran following recent military exchanges.
According to the report, Israeli officials recently passed intelligence to their US counterparts indicating what they described as a specific assassination threat targeting Trump. While US intelligence agencies have been monitoring possible threats against the president for weeks, the latest Israeli assessment reportedly points to a more defined plot.
CNN reported that the warning was conveyed earlier this week. However, US officials have not publicly confirmed the intelligence, and some believe the assessment could also be aimed at influencing Trump’s deliberations over whether to escalate military action against Iran.
Iran’s vow to avenge Soleimani
Iran has repeatedly vowed revenge for the killing of Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force, who was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad in January 2020 during Trump’s first term in office.
US officials have previously warned of potential Iranian threats against current and former American officials linked to the operation.
Trump says he is ‘on every list’
Speaking to reporters in Ankara on Wednesday, Trump referred to the alleged threats against his life.
“They want to take out the US leader—me. I’m on every list. I saw this morning I’m on every single one of their lists. So far, I guess I’ve been a little bit lucky, but maybe that doesn’t last very long,” he said.
- Trump did not provide any evidence to support the claim.
- Trump-Netanyahu coordination continues
The report comes amid suggestions of differences between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over how to deal with Iran following the recent ceasefire.
While Netanyahu has reportedly favoured maintaining military pressure to achieve additional strategic objectives, Trump has expressed interest in avoiding a prolonged conflict, citing concerns about regional stability and the global economy.
Despite reports of disagreements, the two leaders spoke by phone on Thursday. According to the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, they agreed to maintain close coordination, with Trump also briefing Netanyahu on recent US activities in the Gulf region.
The Wall Street Journal also reported that during the early stages of the conflict, Trump and Netanyahu remained in frequent contact, discussing intelligence assessments and potential military targets.
The latest intelligence claims have not been independently verified, and neither the White House nor Iranian officials have publicly commented on the reported assassination plot.
