IMD Weather Update: Heatwave Returns to Coastal Andhra as Heavy Rain Lashes North, East India
India is set to witness contrasting weather conditions on Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting isolated heatwave conditions in Coastal Andhra Pradesh even as the active southwest monsoon continues to bring heavy rainfall across large parts of northern, eastern and northeastern India.
According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, while heavy rain is likely in Arunachal Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi.
Heatwave Returns to Coastal Andhra
Despite the widespread monsoon activity, the weather department has warned that isolated heatwave conditions may develop over Coastal Andhra Pradesh. The forecast highlights the uneven nature of this year’s monsoon, with some regions continuing to experience scorching temperatures while others receive persistent rainfall.
Active Monsoon to Continue
The IMD said the southwest monsoon is expected to remain active over the Himalayan belt, eastern India and the Northeast over the coming days.
States including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Konkan and Goa, Coastal Karnataka, and Uttarakhand are likely to witness widespread rainfall through much of the week, with several areas at risk of heavy showers.
Thunderstorm and Wind Alerts
The weather office has also issued thunderstorm warnings for several regions.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph are likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands, East Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Jharkhand.
Meanwhile, winds of 30-40 kmph are expected over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha and West Madhya Pradesh, while thunderstorms with lightning may also affect parts of Bihar, Uttarakhand and the northeastern states.
IMD Advisory
With sharply contrasting weather conditions prevailing across the country, the IMD has urged residents to remain alert and follow local weather advisories. People living in rain-affected regions have been advised to prepare for waterlogging, reduced visibility and travel disruptions, while those in heatwave-hit areas should stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and take necessary precautions against heat-related illnesses.
