Sukhbir Badal Attack: Accused Blames SAD Leadership for ‘Failure’ to Act Against Drugs

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal was allegedly targeted by the accused, identified.

As 62-year-old Jaspal Singh, over what he described as the former Punjab government’s failure to take strong action against the drug problem, sources said.

According to sources, Singh claimed during questioning that the SAD government had not acted firmly enough against drugs while it was in power in Punjab, which he alleged contributed to several young people falling victim to substance abuse.

Police are examining his statements from multiple angles. The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and central investigating agencies also questioned the accused until late Wednesday night. Authorities are probing whether the attack had any political motive, sources said.

Sukhbir Badal attacked in Nanded

Badal was attacked near Mata Sahib Gurdwara at Takht Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded, Maharashtra, on Thursday.

According to police, the accused, a Nihang identified as Jaspal Singh, allegedly attempted to attack Badal with a kirpan as the SAD chief was coming down the steps after visiting the shrine.

The incident took place around 1:30 pm. The attacker allegedly attempted to strike Badal in the stomach, but security personnel intervened and overpowered him. Badal suffered an injury to his hand and was taken to Yashosai Hospital for treatment.

Police officer injured while stopping attacker

Inspector Santosh Kendre, who was part of the special security detail, sustained injuries while attempting to stop Singh.

Nanded Superintendent of Police Rohan said there was no security lapse and that Badal was under Z+ security cover at the time of the incident. Security personnel quickly intervened and detained the attacker.

Who is Jaspal Singh?

Singh, 62, had reportedly been working at Mata Sahib Gurdwara in Nanded for around two years. He is originally from Pune and had previously worked as a lawyer in a Pune court, according to sources.

During questioning, Singh reportedly told investigators that he had acted because he “just felt like doing this.”

Investigators are examining his background, statements and possible motives as part of the ongoing probe.

FIR registered

Police have registered an FIR against Singh at Mudkhed police station in Nanded in connection with the attack.

The case includes charges related to attempt to murder, obstructing a government employee in the discharge of duty and offences under the Arms Act. Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances and motive behind the attack.

Badal is provided Z+ security. While CISF personnel accompany him in Punjab and Delhi, his security cover in Maharashtra is provided by Maharashtra Police personnel.
