Pezeshkian’s India Visit for BRICS Summit Signals Push to Deepen Ties Amid West Asia Crisis

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to visit India in September to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, as tensions continue to escalate across West Asia.

India is hosting the summit under its BRICS presidency, making Pezeshkian’s visit diplomatically significant. The Iranian leadership is expected to use the occasion to engage with India on regional developments and explore ways to strengthen bilateral ties amid the continuing Iran-US tensions.

Pezeshkian-Modi Meeting Likely

According to Iranian sources, Pezeshkian will travel to New Delhi for the summit, where he is expected to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The two leaders last met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024. Their upcoming interaction could focus on India-Iran relations as well as the wider security situation in West Asia.

The visit comes amid heightened concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, particularly following an attack involving sailors that has added to fears over maritime security and the uninterrupted movement of commercial shipping through the strategically important waterway.

Iran Seeks Stronger Engagement With India

Iran has increasingly highlighted India’s role as a constructive partner in promoting dialogue and regional stability. Tehran has also placed importance on expanding economic and diplomatic cooperation with New Delhi despite the broader geopolitical tensions.

Iran became a full member of BRICS in 2024 along with Egypt, Ethiopia and the UAE. Indonesia joined the grouping in 2025, taking the number of full members to 11.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi had visited New Delhi in May for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. During that visit, he said Iran attaches significant importance to its relationship with India and suggested that New Delhi could contribute to efforts aimed at promoting peace and dialogue in West Asia.

India Backs Diplomacy

Prime Minister Modi has repeatedly voiced concern over the escalation of the West Asia conflict and the loss of civilian lives. New Delhi has called on all sides to prioritise dialogue and diplomacy to resolve outstanding issues.

Against this backdrop, Pezeshkian’s India visit could provide an important platform for discussions on regional security, bilateral cooperation and diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in West Asia.
