Roger Federer has backed Novak Djokovic to challenge for another Grand Slam title, insisting the Serbian cannot be ruled out as long as he continues to enter major tournaments.
Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, has been pursuing a record-extending 25th major title but has struggled to convert recent deep runs into championship victories. His most recent Grand Slam triumph came at the 2023 US Open, when he won three of the four majors.
Since then, Djokovic has reached the Wimbledon final in 2024 and advanced to the Australian Open final this year, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz. His recent results have led to questions about whether the 39-year-old can still compete consistently at the highest level.
Federer, however, believes Djokovic remains a serious threat.
Speaking ahead of his exhibition appearance at Flushing Meadows, the former world No. 1 said Djokovic always has a chance of winning when he enters a Grand Slam.
“Whenever Novak enters any tournament, for that matter, or a major, he’ll have a shot,” Federer said.
The Swiss great said his belief in Djokovic is based on what he has witnessed throughout their long rivalry and the Serbian’s sustained success at the highest level.
“I have many high regards of Novak. I’ve seen what he can do, not just once, not just here or there. He’s done it in every place and at the highest of levels,” Federer said.
Federer Impressed By Djokovic’s Longevity
Federer and Djokovic met 50 times during their careers, with Federer winning 23 of those encounters. Their rivalry produced several memorable Grand Slam battles, although Federer’s only Grand Slam final victory over Djokovic came at the 2007 US Open.
Despite Djokovic’s recent struggles, Federer believes his decision to continue competing reflects his confidence that he can still win major titles.
“As long as he’s in the draw, there’s a chance,” Federer said.
He added that Djokovic would likely not still be competing at the highest level if he did not genuinely believe he could add another Grand Slam trophy to his collection.
Federer also praised Djokovic’s ability to adapt, overcome difficult situations and continually improve throughout his career.
The former world No. 1 described his longtime rival as an “incredible player” and “unbelievable fighter,” highlighting how Djokovic became stronger and more complete as his career progressed.
“I’m very impressed,” Federer said of Djokovic’s longevity and continued competitiveness.
Djokovic will begin his US Open campaign with a mixed doubles appearance alongside Aryna Sabalenka before turning his attention to the singles tournament, where he will once again chase a record 25th Grand Slam title.
