Producer Dinesh Vijan has confirmed that Stree 3, the third instalment of the popular horror-comedy franchise, is slated to release in 2028. The film will reunite Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, with Amar Kaushik returning as director.

The film was earlier scheduled to arrive in theatres on August 13, 2027. While the makers have not announced an exact release date for Stree 3, Vijan hinted that it could hit theatres around Independence Day or Christmas in 2028.

Speaking at FICCI FRAMES 2026, where he appeared alongside Rajkummar Rao, Vijan discussed the future of Maddock Films’ horror-comedy universe and confirmed that Kaushik has completed the script for Stree 3.

“Stree 3 arrives in 2028. If I say anything more, he’ll (Amar Kaushik) get upset with me because he just finished writing it. He thinks that I give out too many spoilers,” Vijan said.

He added that the film will retain the elements audiences have enjoyed in the franchise, while its story will take an unexpected turn.

“Everything that you have loved about it, you’ll get it, but where it starts and where it ends will be a complete revelation. So, I think it might be a nice Independence Day or a Christmas Day present in 2028,” he said.

Vijan also shared an update on Mahavatar, another ambitious project from Amar Kaushik. The film stars Vicky Kaushal as Lord Parashuram and is based on the Hindu deity.

According to Vijan, Kaushik will begin work on Mahavatar in January and wrap up the project by June. The filmmaker will then move on to the next chapter of the horror-comedy universe.

“Amar Kaushik is the most integral part of Stree and the entire horror-comedy franchise. He directs our most ambitious film in January end, which is Bhagwan Parshuram’s story, called Mahavatar. He finishes that in June and at the end of next year, we go on floor,” Vijan said.

Rajkummar Rao recalls Stree’s beginnings

Rajkummar Rao also reflected on the journey of the Stree franchise, recalling how the first film was made as a relatively small-budget project.

Rao said the team had strong faith in the story and Kaushik’s vision from the beginning. He also remembered the relaxed atmosphere on set, saying the cast and crew often joked around while working on the film.

According to Rao, that camaraderie and energy eventually translated onto the screen and became an important part of the franchise’s appeal.
