Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has clarified his recent “can’t feel peace” remark about India after the comment triggered criticism on social media.
The actor, who appeared on Shekhar Suman’s chat show Shekhar Tonite for a special Gandhi Jayanti episode, said he never intended to hurt or disrespect anyone. He explained that his comments were made as part of a scripted conversation designed to be light-hearted and humorous.
Sanjay Dutt Issues Clarification
Taking to X on October 4, Sanjay Dutt addressed the controversy and said his remarks had been interpreted without the context in which they were delivered.
“I would like to clarify that it was never my intention to hurt, offend, or disrespect the sentiments of any individual, community, or institution,” he wrote.
The actor said the conversation was scripted and was intended to carry a humorous tone rather than make a serious statement directed at any person or institution.
“My remarks were made in the context of a scripted conversation intended to be light-hearted and humorous,” Dutt said.
‘Spirit Was Similar to Munna Bhai’s Humour’
Dutt further explained that the underlying message of his comments was centred on love, togetherness and goodwill.
He compared the spirit of the conversation to the humour and satire associated with his Munna Bhai films, particularly the idea of “Gandhigiri” from Lage Raho Munna Bhai.
According to Dutt, the concept was meant to promote “love, warmth, togetherness, and goodwill”. He added that his words were unfortunately understood outside their intended context.
What Sanjay Dutt Said on the Show
During his appearance on Shekhar Tonite, Dutt spoke about his wish to see greater peace in India.
“The people of this country are so lovely. There should be peace here. I can’t feel that peace in our country anymore,” he said.
He also praised Indians for being large-hearted and hospitable, while expressing hope that the country would regain the sense of peace he felt was missing.
“I pray to Shivji that those days come back soon,” the actor said.
Actor Turns to ‘Gandhigiri’ During Satirical Segment
The conversation later shifted to a lighter segment when Dutt was asked what he would do if he became Prime Minister for five minutes.
Drawing on his iconic Munna Bhai persona, the actor delivered a satirical response that touched on foreign travel, political photo opportunities, missiles and tariffs.
He repeatedly brought the conversation back to “Gandhigiri”, the non-violent philosophy popularised by Lage Raho Munna Bhai.
Following the backlash, Dutt’s clarification sought to place his earlier comments within that scripted, satirical context rather than as a statement intended to offend or criticise anyone.
