Putin Proposes Summit With Trump and Xi to Discuss Ukraine Conflict, Report Says
Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed holding a summit next month with US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss ending the four-year war in Ukraine, with a potential settlement reportedly favouring Moscow, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The newspaper, citing a former Russian intelligence officer, reported on Sunday that Putin made the proposal during a telephone conversation with Trump on October 9. The call reportedly also resulted in an understanding involving US purchases of Russian diesel and efforts to facilitate its sale in international markets.
Trump Says US Is Discussing Nuclear Disarmament
The reported summit proposal comes as Washington engages with Moscow and Beijing on nuclear disarmament.
On Thursday, Trump said the United States was holding discussions with Russia and China aimed at denuclearisation. During an interview with Newsmax, he reiterated that Washington was talking to both countries on the issue. The outlet also reported that Trump had discussed denuclearisation with Xi.
The three countries possess significant nuclear capabilities, making their participation central to any broader discussions on reducing global nuclear risks.
Russia, US and China Hold Major Nuclear Arsenals
Russia and the United States have the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals, while China has expanded its nuclear capabilities in recent years, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
Any discussions involving all three powers could have implications for global security and future arms-control arrangements.
However, The Wall Street Journal report did not establish whether Putin’s proposed trilateral summit was directly connected to the nuclear disarmament discussions. It also did not indicate whether Trump or Xi had agreed to participate in the proposed meeting.
The proposal, as reported, would bring together the leaders of Russia, the United States and China at a time when diplomatic efforts surrounding the Ukraine conflict and nuclear security remain significant international issues.
