Stock Market Today: Sensex Drops 307 Points, Nifty Slips Below 22,700 as IT and Banking Stocks Drag

Indian equity markets opened in negative territory on Tuesday, October 27, as selling pressure in information technology, oil and gas, and banking stocks weighed on investor sentiment. Rising crude oil prices and geopolitical uncertainties added to the cautious mood, although gains in select midcap and smallcap stocks provided some support to the broader market.

At around 9:21 am, the BSE Sensex was trading at 73,300.07, down 306.68 points, or 0.42%. The NSE Nifty 50 stood at 22,656.75, declining 96.45 points, or 0.42%.

IT, OIL AND GAS STOCKS LEAD SECTORAL DECLINES

Information technology stocks emerged among the biggest losers in early trading. The Nifty IT index fell 1.68% to 31,729.30, while the Nifty Oil & Gas index dropped 0.86% to 10,430.20.

Banking and financial stocks also traded under pressure. The Nifty Private Bank index declined 0.38%, while the Nifty Financial Services index slipped 0.34%. The Nifty Financial Services 25/50 index lost 0.41%.

Other weak performers included the Nifty Cement index, which fell 0.91%, along with the Nifty FMCG and Nifty Consumer Durables indices, which also traded lower.

In contrast, select sectors managed to post gains. The Nifty Media index advanced 0.87%, making it one of the strongest performers in early trade. The Nifty Pharma index rose 0.63%, while the Nifty Healthcare index gained 0.52%.

The Nifty PSU Bank index climbed 0.57%, and the Nifty Auto index edged up 0.30%.

SMALLCAP STOCKS OUTPERFORM FRONTLINE INDICES

Broader markets displayed resilience despite the weakness in the benchmark indices, with smallcap stocks registering notable gains.

The Nifty Smallcap 100 advanced 1.01%, while the Nifty Smallcap 50 rose 0.95%. The Nifty Smallcap 250 gained 0.70%, and the Nifty Smallcap 500 moved up 0.63%.

Midcap indices also traded largely in positive territory. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Midcap 150 each gained 0.14%, while the Nifty Midcap 50 edged up 0.06%.

Among other broader indices, the Nifty Next 50 advanced 0.36%. However, the Nifty 100 declined 0.28%, and the Nifty 200 slipped 0.20%.

Meanwhile, the India VIX, which tracks expected market volatility, rose 1.36% to 17.40, signalling a modest increase in uncertainty among investors.

HIGH CRUDE PRICES AND BOND YIELDS WEIGH ON SENTIMENT

V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, identified elevated crude oil prices and rising US bond yields as key near-term challenges for the domestic market.

“Brent crude remaining above $114 and the US 10-year bond yield hovering around 4.97% continue to be near-term headwinds for the market. FIIs will remain in a risk-off mode in this adverse macro setting. However, the improving fundamentals of the corporate sector as reflected in Q2 earnings and the robust domestic fund inflows will continue to support the market,” Vijayakumar said.

He noted that the ongoing corporate earnings season and sustained domestic investment inflows could help cushion the impact of adverse global conditions.

According to the market strategist, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) may continue to adopt a cautious approach as elevated crude prices and higher US bond yields weigh on the investment environment.

US MIDTERM ELECTIONS AND MIDDLE EAST TENSIONS IN FOCUS

Vijayakumar also highlighted the upcoming US midterm elections as a potential source of market volatility, particularly given their possible implications for the Trump administration’s political position and foreign policy.

He said opinion polls pointing to a possible Republican loss in the House of Representatives and a closely contested Senate race could have significant political implications. A substantial setback for the Republican Party, he added, could reduce President Donald Trump’s political influence.

Vijayakumar cautioned that Trump’s response, particularly regarding Iran and the broader Middle East, could lead to unexpected developments with implications for global crude oil prices.

Investors are likely to monitor geopolitical developments closely, given the potential impact of energy prices on inflation, corporate costs and overall market sentiment.

Despite the near-term uncertainties, Vijayakumar advised investors not to overlook value-buying opportunities, citing improving corporate fundamentals and robust domestic fund inflows as factors supporting the market outlook.
