INDIA Bloc Rally at Ramlila Maidan: Opposition Mobilises Against SIR, Security Tightened in Delhi

The opposition INDIA bloc, led by the Congress, is holding a major rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1 to protest against alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demand accountability from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstration, scheduled to take place from 10 am to 5 pm, follows a report by The Indian Express that triggered allegations of discrepancies in the voter-list revision process.

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has appealed to students, civil society organisations and citizens to participate in the gathering. Describing the protest as a movement to protect democracy and the Constitution, he has also urged attendees to support local traders by purchasing festive goods from small businesses in Delhi.

Several opposition parties have extended their support to the November 1 demonstration, with multiple Chief Ministers and prominent opposition leaders expected to attend.

The Indian Youth Congress has announced a symbolic protest in which participants will wear white outfits resembling “ghosts”. The attire is intended to represent voters allegedly declared dead or removed from electoral rolls.

Heavy security deployment at Ramlila Maidan
Delhi Police have made extensive security arrangements for the rally, with more than 3,000 police personnel and around 10,000 paramilitary personnel expected to be deployed. Security officials are also keeping a close watch on crowd movement to prevent protesters from moving towards Jantar Mantar.

Senior police officers have estimated that around 50,000 people could attend the gathering. Multiple security zones, barricades and surveillance arrangements have been put in place to manage the expected turnout.

The rally follows the opposition’s symbolic public impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Saturday. Rahul Gandhi had asserted that the CEC would not remain in office and claimed that the Opposition possessed sufficient evidence to challenge his continuation in the post. He warned that the BJP’s decision to retain Kumar despite the allegations would expose its position.

The BJP hit back, suggesting that the Opposition could appoint Rahul Gandhi as its “mock Prime Minister”. Jantar Mantar, which witnessed major demonstrations during the first two weeks of October, has been denotified as a protest site. Delhi Police have identified Ramlila Maidan as one of three designated locations for demonstrations.

BJP attacks INDIA bloc over public impeachment
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticised the INDIA bloc over its symbolic public impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing opposition parties of undermining democratic institutions.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra rejected allegations of manipulation in the electoral rolls during the SIR exercise. He also invoked the political history of the Congress, alleging that Jawaharlal Nehru became Prime Minister through “vote theft” by taking the position that should have gone to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Taking a swipe at Rahul Gandhi, Patra described him as a “satellite that will never launch” and said the Opposition should keep him as its “mock Prime Minister for life”.

CJP extends solidarity but will not join rally
Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke met Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee in Delhi on Saturday. He thanked her for supporting the organisation’s youth-led protests and standing by its leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka during their recent arrests.

Dipke expressed solidarity with the INDIA bloc’s November 1 demonstration against alleged electoral-roll irregularities. However, he clarified that the CJP would not participate in the rally.

Left party supporters reach Delhi
Supporters and workers of several Left parties began arriving at New Delhi Railway Station on Sunday morning to take part in the INDIA bloc’s ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ rally.

Party workers carrying flags and banners gathered outside the station before proceeding towards Ramlila Maidan. The opposition has organised the demonstration to raise concerns over alleged irregularities in the SIR exercise and broader issues related to governance and democracy.

Hardeep Singh Puri questions timing of rally
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri criticised the INDIA bloc for organising its demonstration on November 1, calling the decision a serious political mistake.

Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi on Saturday, Puri pointed out that the date coincides with the anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which followed the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. More than 3,000 people were killed in Delhi during the violence, he said.

Puri questioned the opposition’s choice of date and urged Rahul Gandhi to reconsider the timing, suggesting that the rally could have been held after November 4.

Rahul Gandhi asks protesters to shop from local markets
Ahead of the rally, Rahul Gandhi appealed to participants to support Delhi’s small traders and shopkeepers by making festive purchases during their visit to the capital.

The appeal came after business organisations expressed concerns that the large gathering could affect festive-season trade. Gandhi accused the BJP of spreading rumours among traders and maintained that the rally would not disrupt local businesses.

In a post on X, while extending greetings for Diwali, Chhath and Bhai Dooj, he encouraged visitors to buy goods from small shopkeepers in Delhi’s traditional markets.

Ramlila Maidan gets ready for massive gathering
Preparations were in full swing at Ramlila Maidan early Sunday ahead of the opposition rally. Visuals captured by PTI around 5 am showed workers installing banners, posters and cutouts across the venue.

A large stage, canopy tents, designated seating areas and public-address systems have been arranged. Barricades have also been installed to regulate the movement of participants and maintain security.

With thousands of police and paramilitary personnel expected to remain on duty, authorities have put in place extensive surveillance and crowd-management measures for the day-long demonstration.
