India Face Japan Challenge in Asian Champions Trophy Final as Hosts Target Another Title
India’s expected march to the Asian Champions Trophy final has gone according to plan.

But the hosts now face a tougher test against Japan in Thursday’s title clash at the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior Hockey Stadium in Mohali.

Led by Harmanpreet Singh, India have been the standout team throughout the competition. Their attacking strength and defensive organisation have helped them dominate the tournament, scoring 34 goals and conceding only five in their first five round-robin matches.

India carried that momentum into the semi-finals, thrashing South Korea 8-1 to book their place in the final. However, Japan’s earlier performance against the hosts has provided a reminder that the title cannot be taken for granted.

Japan Emerge as India’s Biggest Challenge
Japan have gradually established themselves as serious contenders, combining disciplined defending with an aggressive pressing strategy.

They began their campaign with a 3-2 victory over South Korea before edging past Bangladesh 1-0. Their league-stage encounter against India proved particularly significant, as they troubled the hosts for almost 47 minutes.

Japan’s high press disrupted India’s passing game and forced several turnovers. They also managed to equalise after India had taken the lead, raising the possibility of an upset before the hosts eventually secured victory.

Japan further strengthened their credentials by defeating Asian Games silver medallists Malaysia twice. After winning their league encounter 2-1, they reached the final following a 5-5 draw and a penalty shootout victory in the semi-final.

Japan captain Raiki Fujishima believes his team must maintain an attacking mindset against India.

“We want to be brave. We want to attack aggressively and also push when we are defending. That’s the game plan,” he said.

Fujishima also dismissed concerns about playing in front of a predominantly Indian crowd, insisting that his players would concentrate on their own performance.

Craig Fulton Wants India to Focus on Basics
India head coach Craig Fulton is keen to ensure that his players do not become complacent despite their impressive campaign.

The South African coach wants the hosts to maintain their structure, start strongly and convert scoring opportunities while remaining organised defensively.

“We want a fast start, and that’s how we want to set it up. But at the same time, they’re a good team. It’s about us taking our chances and defending well,” Fulton said.

He also stressed the importance of returning to the team’s basic playing principles in the final.
Abhishek’s Availability Remains Uncertain

India could face another selection concern ahead of the title clash, with forward Abhishek still recovering from an ankle injury sustained during the match against Malaysia.

Although the 27-year-old was included in the squad and warmed up before Wednesday’s semi-final, he did not take the field.

Fulton indicated that the team would avoid rushing his recovery, particularly with the forward line already dealing with workload concerns involving Mandeep Singh and Rajinder Singh.

“He’s close, but not yet. The last thing we want to do is injure him by forcing him to play. He doesn’t have to play, so we have time,” Fulton said.

India Hold Dominant Head-to-Head Record
Historical numbers favour India heading into Thursday’s encounter. Since 2013, Japan have defeated India only three times, with their most recent victory coming in 2022.

India have won 27 of their 32 meetings, while two matches have ended in draws.

However, Japan’s performance earlier in the tournament suggests that they have the tactical ability to challenge the hosts once again.

India will look to use their attacking depth and home advantage to secure another Asian Champions Trophy crown, while Japan will attempt to disrupt their rhythm and produce a memorable upset.
